Additional Information about the Women of Juarez Film Festival

The Chicana/o Resource Center, MECHA de CSUF and a number of other campus departments would like to invite you to attend the Women of Juarez Film Festival, Monday, March 19, 11:00pm – 8:00pm in the TSU, Pavilions ABC, 800 N. State College Blvd, Fullerton California, 92934. The Women of Juarez Event will include the film premiere of Dia de las Muertas, with a pre and post discussion with the filmmaker Joanna Diaz.

Many Latino communities use the Day of the Dead to honor those who have passed. In recent years, a growing number of social activists have utilized Day of the Dead celebrations to exhibit artwork and innovative altars, commemorating the victims of femicide in the border city of Juarez, Mexico. These striking visual statements keep the unsolved murders firmly in the public eye. The ethnographic film, Dia de las Muertas, analyzes the significance of the altars and artwork for those who produce and view them throughout various Day of the Dead celebrations in Southern California.

Through its narrative, the film focuses on ways that these cultural events educate the public while simultaneously advocating against gender-based violence toward women. The film provides an introduction to the tradition of Day of the Dead as well as the history of the femicide occurring since 1993. The film then correlates how the traditions of the Day of the Dead are utilized to shed light on the horrific crimes and arouse a deep sense of passion in those who experience the socially conscious demonstrations. Given the power that films have to educate and motivate viewers to act against human rights violations, this film works to equip audience members with an ability to combat the injustices perpetrated against ‘the women of Juarez’ through cultural expressions and creativity.

There will also be additional activities which will include the screening of Senorita Extraviada, Arts and Crafts, Toyocan Azteca Unidos Dancers, and a Papel Picado workshop. Come learn more about the murders in Juarez.
